Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Alaskan Wonder
Day 1 ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
Arrive in Anchorage, where you are met and privately transferred to your accommodation. The gateway to North America’s greatest frontier, Anchorage offers both big-city comfort and beautiful scenic backdrops, along with an exceptionally colorful history infused with native traditions. A metropolitan presence in the midst of wilderness, Anchorage is also known to be visited by the region’s four-legged inhabitants, with moose commonly sighted inside the city limits. Your accommodations provide close access to some of the city’s more notable galleries, shops and restaurants.
This morning, drive north to Talkeetna for an exclusive, private jet boat trip up the Susitna River to the ghost town of Curry. On your way upriver, be on the lookout for roaming wildlife, stands of wildflowers and beautiful views of the Alaska Range. Curry once thrived as a stop on the Alaska Railroad, but a series of fires caused the town to be abandoned. Your captain leads you on an exploration of the townsite before serving a riverside lunch. Your return journey includes a stop at a Native Alaskan Dena’ina camp and a visit to a historic trapper’s cabin.
Visit the kennels of Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey for a private dry land mushing experience. Meet the dogs (including this year's puppies) at the kennels and learn how these canine endurance athletes are raised and trained. You also hear about the life of a musher and what it takes to win the Iditarod, the world's most iconic dogsled race. Then, climb aboard a wheeled racing rig used to train dog teams without snow for an exhilarating ride through the Talkeetna woods. In the afternoon, embark on a shared flightseeing adventure to within six miles of Denali’s summit, which rises to 20,320 feet above sea level. Enter a world of towering snow-capped mountains and glacier-filled valleys as you explore the south and east faces of Denali from a thrilling aerial perspective. See the enormous Ruth Glacier, the Great Gorge with its mile-high granite walls and blue meltwater pools, and dozens of glacial and alpine features. Your highlight is actually landing on a glacier (weather-permitting), where you have the chance to step outside and experience the majesty and solitude of the Alaska Range.
This morning, drive north to Denali National Park, where you join your private local guide for a gentle two-mile walk along Byers Lake, a great introduction to the nature of the Denali area. Denali National Park offers some of the finest natural habitat wildlife viewing in America. Its broad landscape is the habitat of large caribou, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, and grizzly bears. Tiny plants contrast their grand significance as food to the animals that live or migrate through here. Visit a historic trapper’s cabin, watching for wildlife along the way. Enjoy your afternoon at leisure to relax or take a stroll through charming, picturesque Talkeetna, a tiny hamlet of less than a thousand people that for many visitors captures the essence of small-town Alaska life.
This morning, drive south to the Kenai Peninsula, where you set out with your naturalist guide on a relaxed, private float down the scenic Portage River. A wilderness haven for hiking, boating, kayaking, rafting and sightseeing by train, the peninsula is home to stunning fjords, calving glaciers and a wide variety of marine life, including humpback whales, orcas, sea lions and puffins. Enjoy the views of the Chugach Mountains, hanging glaciers and thick spruce forest as your raft wends its way along the water, keeping your eyes peeled for moose and other wildlife in the valley. Following your rafting excursion, enjoy an authentic Alaskan salmon bake.
Drive to Whittier for a private glacier-and-wildlife cruise. Depending on the day’s weather and local conditions, your itinerary could include a thrilling cruise among the towering tidewater glaciers in Harriman Fjord. Alternatively, you might cruise into the heart of Prince William Sound to spy orcas and humpback whales. Explore shorelines, bird rookeries, marine wildlife and calving glaciers. Go ashore on a remote beach for some tide pooling or a short hike into this northernmost rainforest. Other wildlife you can expect to see on this action-packed day includes sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, Dall's porpoises and plenty of sea birds (including puffins) — a fittingly thrilling finale to an amazing adventure.
Drive to Anchorage for your departure flight.
